The long spiral Shofars were used by Yemenite Jews for generations. Today, they are popular throughout the world. They come from the Kudu, a large antelope found in south or east Africa.
The Shofar plays a central role in the Rosh Hashanah prayers. There are strict specifications regarding the notes and methods of blowing. Two of the Shofar sounds are teruah and shevorim. These are broken notes and they represent a series of short sharp staccato blasts, reminiscent of sobbing or wailing. Their message is timely and appropriate.
